Safety Tips for Wax Melters and Candle Warmers

Wax melters and candle warmers can become hot enough to cause burns or start a fire. Use the appliance only as directed by the manufacturer and keep the instructions for reference.

Before Use

·         Check the warmer, cord, plug, dish, and bulb for cracks, fraying, looseness, discoloration, or other damage. Do not use damaged equipment.

·         Confirm that the product has not been recalled, and use only the bulb, wax, candle size, or accessories specified by the manufacturer.

·         Set the warmer upright on a stable, level, heat-resistant, uncluttered surface where it cannot be bumped or tipped.

·         Keep it away from curtains, bedding, paper, decorations, clothing, drafts, water, and other heat or ignition sources.

·         Place it out of reach of children and pets. Remember that melted wax and the dish may remain hot after the unit is switched off.

While in Use

·         Stay nearby and check the warmer regularly. Turn it off before leaving the room, going to sleep, or leaving home.

·         Do not touch or move the warmer, dish, bulb, candle, or melted wax while hot.

·         Do not overfill the dish or add water, fragrance oil, or other substances unless the instructions specifically permit it.

·         Keep the cord where it will not be pulled, pinched, covered, or tripped over. Do not let it touch hot surfaces.

·         Stop using it immediately if you notice smoke, sparking, unusual odors, excessive heat, a flickering connection, or a damaged dish.

For Electric Warmers

·         Plug the warmer directly into a suitable wall outlet unless the manufacturer says otherwise. Do not overload outlets or use a damaged extension cord or power strip.

·         Unplug by gripping the plug, not the cord. Switch off and unplug the unit before cleaning or changing a bulb.

·         Allow the appliance and wax to cool completely before handling, emptying, or storing.

For Tea-Light or Flame-Based Warmers

·         Treat the tea light as an open flame. Keep it at least 12 inches (30 centimeters) from anything that can burn.

·         Use the correct candle in a sturdy warmer designed for an open flame. Never leave it unattended.

·         Keep hair and loose clothing away and extinguish the flame before it burns too close to its container or holder.

·         Do not use flame-based warmers in bedrooms, sleeping areas, or anywhere someone may fall asleep.

Spills, Burns, and Emergencies

·         For a wax spill, keep people and pets away and let the wax cool before removal. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning directions.

·         For a minor burn, cool the area under clean, cool running water. Do not use ice or peel away wax stuck to the skin. Seek medical help for a serious, large, blistering, facial, hand, joint, or electrical burn.

·         If the heater catches fire, leave the area, close the door if possible, and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not use water on an electrical fire.

·         Keep working smoke alarms on every level of the home and test them regularly.
